Herkimer County HealthNet Offers Grants to School Cafeteria Programs

HERKIMER – Herkimer County HealthNet is offering Herkimer County public schools two grants up to $3,500 to be used for a sustainable plan for improving nutrition in school lunch programs.


Recommended strategies and measures to help communities tackle the problem of obesity through environmental change and policies that promote physical activity include:


• Increasing availability of healthier food and beverage choices in public service venues,
• Improving availability of affordable healthier food and beverage choices in public service venues,
• Reducing barriers to enrolling in free and reduced school lunch program,
• Increasing enrollment in free and reduced school lunch program,
• Improving availability of mechanisms for purchasing foods from farms,
• Restricting availability of less healthy foods and beverages in public service venues,
• Instituting smaller portion size options in public service venues,
• Limiting advertisements of less healthy foods and beverages,
• Discouraging the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.


The deadline for submitting the grant applications is Friday, November 9, 2012. Grant applications are available from Herkimer County HealthNet. Interested schools should contact Thomas Curnow, Executive Director at:
